Ubiskes3: Magic and Alchemy

During my time at the Ubiskes3 residency, I developed a body of work centred on domestic space, ritual, and protection. Working within a rural Lithuanian context, I became increasingly interested in the relationship between home as a site of care and as a site of vulnerability. This led to the development of Protective Rite for the Home / Namų apsaugos ritualas, a spellbook that draws on Lithuanian pagan histories and domestic ritual practices, combining text and image to explore protection as both symbolic and embodied.

Alongside this, I produced an installation for the launch of Alchemy of Becoming / Virsmo alchemija, transforming a bedroom within the residency site into a ritual environment. Using bricks, ribbon, handmade books, dried flowers, paint, found objects, eggshells, and black candles, I constructed a space that functioned as both altar and enclosure. The bed became a central point of focus, surrounded by a low boundary that suggested containment and defence, while suspended and scattered elements extended the work into the wider room. The installation drew on personal experience as well as broader references to ritual practice, positioning domestic space as something that can be actively constructed and protected.

The residency allowed me to deepen my engagement with material processes and spatial thinking, particularly in relation to installation. It also provided time to reflect on how my ongoing research into cyberfeminism and identity could intersect with more tactile, ritual-based approaches. While much of my work engages with digital space and constructed avatars, this period emphasised the importance of physical environments and embodied experience, reinforcing my interest in how spaces, whether digital or domestic, can be shaped as sites of transformation, care, and resistance.
